Art therapy provides an opportunity for self-expression and communication in a confidential and caring setting. It is helpful for children of any age who find it difficult to articulate what is bothering them. Children who may benefit from Art Therapy include those who are experiencing emotional upset, behavioural difficulties, anxiety or depression. These difficulties can arise from: school or learning challenges, life transitions, loss, bullying, trauma, cognitive or social challenges, physical and health issues, communication struggles, negative thinking or problems at home.
It is not necessary to be artistically talented in order to engage in art therapy; it is not about accomplishment and technique but rather about what the images express.
I blend my training as an Art Therapist and Learning Specialist to help children develop personal awareness, self-control and self-direction. Whether or not a child can or wishes to verbalize, ART MAKING holds and communicates the thoughts, stories, and emotions a child is experiencing. When ready to make verbal associations, TALKING together allows the child to express thoughts and feelings.
The Process
The initial consultation with the child’s parents and child helps determine areas of concern, needs, and possible goals. Written parental/guardian permission is obtained before starting work with a child. In subsequent sessions the child may draw, paint, do collage, clay work or sculpture.
It is the child who sets the pace. Children may experience a wide range of feelings during a session as they work through issues.
Images can often draw children’s attention to aspects of themselves of which they may be unaware, but when recognized, can offer insights into their story, motivation, and patterns of behaviour.
They often learn they have a choice about how to react, and can draw on their inner resourcefulness to take steps to modify what they do. Frequently, children experience relief, relaxation, emotional well-being, pride and an increase in confidence and self-esteem. Most importantly, they feel they have been heard.
With the child's permission, artwork is photographed to provide a confidential pictorial record of progress over time. This tangible reference depicts the child's perspective of issues worked on. It also shows shifts, changes and growth.
Depending on a child’s needs the duration of Art Therapy may range from as little as a few weeks to six months or longer. For therapy to be effective the majority of individuals benefit most from weekly sessions at first, then coming once every two weeks, then every three weeks, then once a month, until enough progress has been achieved in relation to the initial goals. Some children get what they need after 8 to 16 sessions. Others may come and go over the years for a top-up or as new issues arise.

I usually work with children on the
weekend or during school breaks. Children are generally too tired during the school week for evening appointments to be effective.
